The Lore
The Hurricane Ride
The lore of Team Shake N Bake is heavily rooted in the actions of a single man, Jeff Dickert. He was set to ride in the 2015 MS City to Shore ride when the event was delayed a week due to a visitation by the Pope to Philadelphia, PA. In that time hurricane Joaquin rolled into New Jersey canceling the ride for the year.
Unperturbed by neither an act of God or Mother Nature and supported by a stubborn nature, Jeff was determined to ride in support of those with MS. He aimed to complete 150 miles, in three 25 mile loops, in his home town of New Egypt, NJ. Thankfully, a neighbor agreed to ride with him and his wife Tura waiting at home in the event support was required.
However, 10 miles into the ride the neighbor understandably called it quits when hypothermia set in due to the extremely wet, windy, and dangerous weather conditions. Unbothered and protected by his wet suit Jeff completed the remaining 140 miles alone for a total of 150 miles over two days.
This behavior exemplifies the Team Shake N Bake values and highlights Jeff's unwillingness to be told what to do even in the face of all logic and reason. This can be best summed up in a quote from the movie "The Sandlot:"
"Remember, kid, there's heroes and there's legends. Heroes get remembered, but legends never die. Follow your heart, kid, and you'll never go wrong." - Babe Ruth
